Arctic Rush: Securing America’s Future with Critical Minerals from the North

Arctic Rush

America’s economic strength relies on reliable access to key resources, and right now, the Arctic is emerging as a vital frontier in that pursuit. As global demand surges for materials essential to electric vehicles, semiconductors, and defense tech, nations are turning northward to challenge China’s longstanding control over rare earth elements and other strategic minerals. This shift could bolster U.S. supply chains, create jobs, and enhance national security by diversifying sources away from foreign dependencies.

Greenland stands out in this landscape, packed with untapped deposits of base metals, precious metals, gemstones, rare earths, and uranium.

“Greenland, right now, is a repository of a lot of base metals, precious metals, gem stones, rare earths, uranium … it’s all there.” Warming temperatures and easier navigation are making these resources more accessible, positioning the region as a counterweight to Beijing’s dominance. “with climate change and the ability to navigate the Arctic Ocean much more frequently, especially during the summer months, Greenland is starting to be looked at much more carefully as a potential alternative source for a lot of these strategic materials to China.”

Companies are already staking claims. Critical Metals is advancing a major rare earth project in southern Greenland, drawing investor attention amid renewed U.S. focus under President Trump. Amaroq Minerals recently uncovered high-grade rare earths and confirmed commercial levels of germanium and gallium—minerals hit hard by China’s export restrictions.

“The germanium, gallium piece is, in my opinion, much bigger news than people understand,” said geologist Renee Glick. These elements power everything from chips to military gear, and shortages could hamstring American innovation. “That is a mineral that the U.S. and the European Union need now. The rare earths are being processed by Lynas and MP Materials. That is something that you can access, I wouldn’t say easier, but you can access it … Germanium and gallium, if you don’t have them then that is a massive problem.”

Over in Sweden, state-owned LKAB is developing one of Europe’s largest rare earth deposits at Per Geijer, leveraging existing iron ore infrastructure. Yet even with that head start, profitability isn’t guaranteed. “We’ve already got the material up to the ground. That’s all been paid for by the iron ore. Still, it’s not a given that this is a business case.”

The excitement around an Arctic “gold rush” comes with caveats. Harsh conditions demand massive upfront investments in infrastructure, and timelines stretch to 15-20 years before operations turn profitable. This is where perception and reality tend to kick in. Setting up mines requires importing everything from equipment to supplies.

Geopolitically, the stakes are high. The U.S. sees Greenland as crucial for economic and defense needs, with Trump once calling ownership an “absolute necessity.” Canada is ramping up its Arctic presence, while Russia bolsters its claims with new icebreakers. Environmental shifts from melting ice expose more land but raise questions about sustainability in a fragile ecosystem.

For American interests, tapping Arctic minerals means reducing vulnerabilities in global trade. By investing here, the U.S. can foster domestic processing, support allied partnerships, and drive economic growth in tech and manufacturing sectors. As competition intensifies, prioritizing these northern resources could prevent future shortages and keep America’s economy leading the pack.
