Trump Admin Freezes All Visa Processing for 75 Countries With People Who Are Likely to “Become a Public Charge”

The State Department has announced a sweeping pause on immigrant visa processing for applicants from 75 countries, effective January 21. This decision comes as the administration ramps up efforts to enforce long-standing rules against admitting individuals likely to depend on public benefits. Officials cite the need to overhaul screening processes that have allowed potential abusers of taxpayer-funded programs to slip through in the past.

A key trigger for this move appears tied to recent revelations of widespread fraud in Minnesota, where Somali-run child care centers have come under intense scrutiny. A viral video released by content creator Nick Shirley in late December 2025 exposed several facilities, including the Quality Learning Center, which received nearly $2 million in public funds while showing signs of minimal operation.

State records later confirmed the center’s closure, and its owner, Fozia Sheik Ali, had a prior conviction for wire fraud related to another daycare in 2016. The video, viewed millions of times, prompted federal investigations by the FBI and Homeland Security, uncovering schemes that allegedly siphoned over $200 million from education, Medicaid, and housing programs.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott explained the rationale: “The State Department will use its long-standing authority to deem ineligible potential immigrants who would become a public charge on the United States and exploit the generosity of the American people. Immigration from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassesses immigration processing procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would take welfare and public benefits.”

The affected nations include Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, and Yemen, among others. Consular officers have been directed to deny visas under existing law, with only narrow exceptions after thorough public charge evaluations. This list raises questions about national security risks, given the inclusion of countries with histories of terrorism, espionage, and economic instability.

Historically, the public charge provision dates back decades, but its application has fluctuated with political winds. During President Trump’s first term, a 2019 rule expanded considerations to include factors like health, age, finances, and English proficiency, aiming to safeguard American resources. That approach faced legal challenges and was narrowed in 2022 under the Biden administration, which limited the benefits counted toward public charge determinations. Critics argue that lax enforcement in recent years opened the door to exploitation, as seen in Minnesota’s scandals.

The timing of this pause, just over a year into Trump’s second term, signals a return to stricter immigration controls. President Trump has repeatedly emphasized protecting American workers and taxpayers from foreign burdens, and this action aligns with broader reforms. In Minnesota alone, the fraud probes have led to over 90 indictments, highlighting how unchecked programs can drain public coffers meant for citizens.

Somali communities in Minnesota have reacted to recent scrutiny with increased harassment, including vandalism and threats, following the video’s spread. Federal funding for child care in the state was temporarily frozen, affecting legitimate providers and families. Supporters see it as a necessary reckoning, exposing networks that may extend beyond borders and involve coordinated efforts to game the system.

Some observers speculate deeper motives at play, wondering if these fraud rings point to organized infiltration enabled by porous policies under prior leadership. After all, Minnesota’s issues didn’t emerge overnight; they’ve built over years, raising suspicions about who benefited from turning a blind eye. Wise stewardship means resources entrusted to a nation should first serve its people, not be squandered on those who arrive with intentions to take rather than contribute.

As the review proceeds indefinitely, this pause could reshape U.S. immigration for the long haul. It sends a clear message: entry into America is a privilege, not an open invitation to rely on others’ hard-earned dollars. With ongoing investigations and potential expansions, the administration’s focus on accountability may uncover more layers to these entrenched problems.

30-40 Million have to be deported after those numbers a met; you probably have another 15-25 million who over stayed for up to 30 years, maybe longer, those are next.

One you’ve cleaned up 60 million people then you’ll notice the US becoming the United States. It seems impossible now, it will happen.

Refuse visas to foreigners who might become a public charge? And maybe deport those who do become one? Heck I wouldn’t be against deporting some of our own citizens for being a habitual public charge! You don’t have to sell me, I’m on board 100%…

Not one more dime, they should be held accountable for the damage they caused. The American people have had enough of the free loaders at our expense. The representatives of that state and others should all be held and tried for treason. I’ve been poor most of my life and never took one dime in benefits. And now that I’m in a different tax bracket, they steal from me to give to American haters. Maybe paying taxes won’t be on my list of things to worry about paying.
