Texas Is America’s New Economic Center of Gravity and New York Helped

Texas Triumph Over Urban Exodus

Capital is not confused. It is not lost. It is leaving the places that treat it like a suspect and parking itself where the state still acts glad it showed up.

That is the plain reading of what former Congressman Jeb Hensarling told Fox News Digital on Sunday from the Dallas headquarters of the Texas Stock Exchange. Hensarling, a strategic adviser to the exchange, did not dress it up.

Texas is really becoming the economic center of gravity in America. As New York is increasingly shoving capital out, Texas is saying, ‘You’re welcome.’ We put out the welcome mat, whereas New York, capital isn’t really made to feel at home, and capital wants to go where it’s made to feel at home.

There it is. No mystery. No climate parable. A welcome mat versus a shove.

The last piece of the puzzle is a stock exchange

Texas has been poaching headquarters for years. Cheaper land, no state income tax, courts that do not treat a payroll as a sin, energy you can actually plug into. Hensarling’s point is that the state has now stacked the rest of the corporate life cycle on top of that.

Texas has been a great place to do business for decades. But increasingly, it’s a great place to headquarter your business. Over the last couple of legislative sessions, because of laws passed, it’s a great place to incorporate your business. And really the last piece of that puzzle was the Texas Stock Exchange, which is now making Texas the best place to list your company and to go public.

The exchange won Securities and Exchange Commission approval last year. It is built to do what the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have treated as a birthright. Give a company a place to list. Give investors a place to trade. Do it in Dallas instead of lower Manhattan.

Skeptics rolled their eyes and called it Y’all Street, as if a nickname were an argument. Hensarling’s answer was sharper than the joke.

If it was gimmicky, I’m not really sure the competition would be all of a sudden setting up offices here.

The listings are not hypothetical. Energy Transfer, Dillard’s, Sunoco, and Texas Capital Bank have already chosen the Texas exchange as a primary listing home. JPMorgan and BlackRock put money behind the venture. Executives walked over from the exchanges Texas is trying to nick. Hensarling noted the obvious. Firms that size do not park capital where they expect to watch it die.

They don’t put their capital in places where they think it’s going to lose money. It’s a lot of validation from the market already.

A tale of two states with the receipts attached

This did not start with a trading floor. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the quiet part in Houston back in June, and Fox News carried it. Standing at the Petroleum Club, he called Texas and California a tale of two states. Every five minutes, he said, a taxpayer moves to Texas while two flee California. California led the country in layoffs. Texas led in job gains. Texas had just taken the crown as home to the most Fortune 500 companies in America.

Texas has become America’s center of gravity because it is fostering the conditions for families and businesses to flourish.

That is Bessent, not a chamber of commerce brochure. He had just come from a California whose tax code punishes ambition and whose regulators treat a refinery like a moral failing. The Golden State now produces a sliver of the oil Texas pulls out of the ground, then imports the difference and lectures the rest of the country about virtue. Families did the math. So did the companies.

Dallas-Fort Worth has spent the better part of a decade as the country’s top metro for headquarters relocations, pulling firms out of Los Angeles, the Bay Area, New York, and Chicago. Austin is right behind it. The pattern is boring in the way gravity is boring. People and payrolls roll downhill toward lower taxes, usable energy, and a government that does not file a lawsuit every time someone builds something.

Welcome is a policy, not a mood

New York did not lose this by accident. It taxed the producers, regulated the landlords, cheered the prosecutors, and then acted shocked when the trading desks started answering Dallas area codes. California did the same trick with a greener paint job. Both states still have talent, ports, and history. History does not sign the lease.

Hensarling put the migration in one line.

People are coming to Texas because, again, capital is made to feel welcome. It’s an economic juggernaut. All in all, they’re coming here because this is where, economically, the action is.

Scripture already named the principle. “For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee” (Psalm 128:2). A state that lets a man eat the labor of his hands will fill up. A state that skims the plate and calls the remainder justice will watch the U-Hauls leave at dawn.

Wall Street is not dead. It is no longer the only room where American companies go public. That is what a welcome mat does when the other house keeps shoving people off the porch.
