Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk accused career Treasury Department officials of instructing employees to issue “fraudulent” payments to ineligible recipients.
The New York Times and other outlets reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has allowed the Department of Government Efficiency to gain access the federal government’s payment system.
“The @DOGE team discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once,” Musk, the chair of DOGE, wrote Saturday on X.
On Sunday, Musk wrote that “career Treasury officials are breaking the law every hour of every day by approving payments that are fraudulent or do not match the funding laws passed by Congress.”
