Elon Musk Tells Ordinary Americans to Stop Saving Because Superintelligent Abundance Is Coming

The richest man on the planet just told regular people to quit worrying about their retirement accounts. Elon Musk posted on X that “Saving money for the distant future is pointless with the advent of super intelligent abundance.”

He was answering a user who shrugged off questionable financial choices because a coming age of plenty would make most of them irrelevant anyway. When the man with a net worth approaching a trillion dollars says nest eggs will not matter, ordinary families should pay attention—for the wrong reasons.

This is not a one-off. On the Moonshots podcast earlier this year Musk advised, “Don’t worry about squirreling money away for retirement in 10 or 20 years. It won’t matter.” He added the condition that “If any of the things that we’ve said are true, saving for retirement will be irrelevant.”

In that world, advances in AI, energy, and robotics supposedly supercharge productivity so thoroughly that “anyone can have whatever stuff they want,” with better medical care than exists today, no scarcity of goods and services, and free learning about anything. In a multiplanetary economy he has described to biographer Walter Isaacson, money itself becomes irrelevant and conventional currency will not matter.

Saving money for the distant future is pointless with the advent of super intelligent abundance.

Business Insider noted that seven personal finance and AI experts all pushed back. Keep saving. The prediction might be wrong. Fox News published a sharp takedown by financial adviser Ted Jenkin making the same point more bluntly. Musk’s own fortune lets him treat the future as a thought experiment.

A 40-year-old who pauses 401(k) contributions for a decade waiting on robots loses real compound growth measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Groceries, housing, and healthcare do not pause for the arrival of abundance. History shows technological leaps concentrate gains first and distribute them later—if they distribute them at all.

Factory workers, retail clerks, and taxi drivers already learned that automation does not automatically write checks to the displaced.

The Government Check Solution

Musk’s own bridge across the “bumpy” transition is government payments. He has floated “universal high income” via federal checks as the best way to handle AI-driven unemployment, arguing that robot production of goods and services will outrun any increase in the money supply so inflation never appears. Breitbart has tracked the proposal.

Economists have called the inflation claim wrong. The deeper problem is older than AI. Handing out federal checks as the permanent answer to job loss expands dependency, weakens the incentive to work or save, and places more power in the same institutions that already struggle to keep Social Security solvent. Bill Gates has echoed the abundance vision while warning that the next two decades could be as tumultuous as any period in human history. Tumult and government checks make a volatile combination.

Michael Saylor has offered a simpler counter. Even if robots make necessities cheap, people will still compete for scarce status goods—Hampton houses, private jets, the penthouse that not everyone can occupy at once. Scarcity does not vanish because production rises. Human nature does not vanish either. The desire for more, the temptation to envy, and the need for purpose remain.

Musk has acknowledged that if everyone gets everything they want, the real question becomes whether that future is actually desirable. Work, he has said, might become optional like a hobby. Purpose, however, is not optional.

Stewardship Does Not Wait for Utopia

Scripture does not instruct believers to presume on a technological rescue that has not arrived. James wrote, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”

Planning for tomorrow is not faithlessness. It is the opposite of the rich fool who stored up goods and assumed he had years to enjoy them. Diligent saving, taking the employer match, building an emergency reserve, and reducing high-interest debt are acts of responsibility toward family and future. They leave optionality intact whether Musk’s timeline holds or slips by decades.

AI and robotics will change production and employment. That is already happening. The claim that they will erase the need for personal preparation within a decade or two is a bet on a specific sequence of technical breakthroughs, political decisions, and equal distribution that history has never delivered on schedule. A billionaire can afford the wager.

Most Americans cannot. The prudent path is the one the experts and common sense already recommend. Save. Invest. Stay out of debt. Enter whatever future arrives with assets rather than anxiety. Optimism is not a retirement plan.
